Woodley go down to third defeat in Hellenic League Division ONE Subsidary Cup group stage

The away side got off to the brighter start taking the lead on ten minutes courtesy of Lemar Maycock netting from close range after an initial shot from the left was kept out.

Falling behind spurred the home side into life; Toby Briggs had a shot from just inside the box blocked whilst two Chace Jewell crosses saw a lack of bodies in the box unable to take advantage of what were perfect deliveries.

Despite the pressure from United, they were still to test Amadeo Kryekurti in the Aldermaston goal. Harry Swabey saw his shot deflect behind for a corner. The resultant delivery was cleared to a blue shirt who narrowly missed to the left from thirty yards.

Swabey had another shot blocked before some good play by captain Sam Guze saw him turn a defender in the box and pick out Pablo Fernandez who had his well struck effort blocked by Victor Sesay.

The half ended with a pair of chances for the away side. A fortunate bounce saw a shot half volleyed wide whilst a cross from the left ended with Alex Badshah testing debutant Callum Sangwell in the Woodley goal.

The second half started with a couple of chances for Briggs. A superb raking cross field pass from Jewell found the United man on the right; striking the ball well it went narrowly over. Fernandez created the second chance; showing great acceleration and agility he skipped past several players before teeing up Briggs who fired over from the right of the box.

Ten minutes after the restart you had the feeling it wasn’t going to be Woodley’s night when a penalty was awarded to the hosts for handball only for the decision to be reversed when the ref noticed the linesman had his flag up.

United were having plenty of possession but shots were either blocked or off target. Harry Hawkins saw a shot hit a red shirt before an ambitious curling strike from Fernandez missed to the right.

With eighteen minutes left Aldermaston doubled the lead completely against the run of play. A through ball to Jamel Forde-Small ended with him prodding past Sangwell. To be fair, it was a really well taken goal.

Two minutes after the goal, Woodley finally tested Kryekurti when a shot from the left was kept out. The ball broke to Freddie Barron who crashed a shot against the right post.

At the other end, the home side were lucky not to fall further behind when two sublime Tom Browne corners caused carnage in the home box. The first delivery was somehow missed by everyone whilst the second saw a Maycock header miss to the left.

United made a double change on eighty one minutes. Joe Sissons and Hawkins made way for Andrew Gilbert and Ross Blakemore who was making his maiden appearance for the first team.

Blakemore was involved in the next two chances; his half volley went over before a nice ball to Swabey saw a heavy touch prevent him going one on one with Kryekurti.

With the game in added time Woodley pulled one back due to a cracking goal from Fernandez. Receiving a pass from Briggs, he cut in from the left and smashed the ball into the top right corner.
