With the season kicking off in three weeks time Woodley United's pre-season continued on Saturday when they travelled to Surrey to face Sheerwater FC.
United lined up with a team that was very different to the side that drew last weekend against Highmoor Ibis. Only four players that started last week played from the beginning today.
The hosts started with a lot of possession but were lacking an end product in the final third. Apart from a shot that just missed to the right Woodley were looking comfortable at the back. Twelve minutes in and an under hit backpass gifted United their first chance; striker Sam Ellis struck his shot from just oustide the box well but was denied by a decent stop.
Just after the mid way point of the first half and Sheerwater went ahead when a long ball from the back was picked up by the striker who lobbed over Dan Smith in the Woodley goal. Seven minute later and the home side doubled their lead when a low shot from eighteen yards found the bottom corner and it was three moments later when a low cross from the left was turned in from ten yards.
Despite the scoreline Woodley battled on. Jordan Goddard saw his effort from distance go narrowly over before a Jay Welch drive from thirty five yards was well saved in the left corner.
HT Sheerwater 3-0 Woodley United
Six minutes after the restart and Woodley fell further behind when a shot from the edge of the box beat Smith to his left. The scoring was completed five minutes later when Sheerwater got their fifth. A United defender blocked the initial shot but the rebound was tucked home.
The final thirty five minutes were played without either team creating a meaningful chance as fatigue set in for both sides.
