An excellent team performance see the season ended in style.

Woodley United Ladies completed their league season with back to back away wins, the latest being at Warsash Wasps a team they lost at home to in March.

United stated with high tempo and were rewarded in the third minute when Rosie Page-Smith open the scoring from Ruth Pearson’s pass. Four minutes later Molly Lambourne won a free kick which Ellen Surtees put into the penalty but no visitor reacted quickly enough and the ball was cleared.

The hosts’ first chance on goal came ten minutes into the game with a header from a corner however, Woodley remained the dominant team winning a number of free kicks in the opponents half and corners.

Page-Smith increased the lead in the twenty second minute when she was put through on goal by May Hamblin. The striker’s shot hit the post but Page-Smith reacted quickest to the rebound tapping it into an unguarded net.

Jodie Penny twice had opportunities to score when she shot from twenty yards and a few minutes late saw Rebecca Gardiner save an effort after receiving a pass from Clara Stringer.

Wasps responded with Nicole Haines being required to make an excellent save from Megan Fox’s long range shot while six minutes from half time Wasps were denied by the cross bar.

A change of formation saw the hosts start the second half in dominant manner but Surtees and the outstanding Charley Evans were equal to task. It was not until nine minutes into the half that United were able to mount their first attack which saw Penny set up May but the winger was blocked and prevented from getting a shot on goal. A minute later Holly Wilkins put an effort over the cross bar but the lead was further extended in the fifty sixth minute when a deft free kick by Surtees put Page-Smith one on one with Gardiner to complete her hat trick.

Hamblin then saw her long range lob beat Gardiner but narrowly go wide before Francis Lanham but a shot from the hosts over the bar on the hour.

Wasps reduced the deficit on sixty six minutes when sub Stacey Parkinson saw an effort hit both post and trickle into the Woodley goal net.

The goal inspired the hosts but it was not until the eighty third minute that they scored a second when Fox unleased a shot from forty yards into Haines’ top right hand corner. This set up a grand stand finish that saw seven minutes stoppage time played and needed Haines to make another outstanding save to secure the visitors the win.

Haines, Stringer, Surtees, Evans, Pearson, Sawyer, Penny, Lambourne (Hunt), Page-Smith, Hamblin, Wilkins
