Woodley United Ladies cup season came to an end on Sunday at Moneyfields with a lack lustre display against the unbeaten leaders of the league’s Division One South.
Playing into a strong wind, United started well with Rosie Page-Smith twice in good positions but shooting wide, before Katie Shorter headed the hosts into the lead in the fifth minute following a corner.
Thereafter, the home team enjoyed plenty of possession in the visitors half and where denied by a number of offside decisions of Nicole Haines, in particular making one fine save with the feet.
The thirty-eight minute saw Moneyfields reduced to ten players when Alison Goater was dismissed for denying Holly Wilkins an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Ellen Surtees resulting free kick over the cross bar.
The second half got off to the worse possible start for United when Ciara Boylan doubled the lead five minutes into the half when she beat Haines at the keeper’s left post from outside the penalty area.
While Woodley had the extra player advantage they failed to trouble home keeper Sally-Ann Thompson and the match was over as a contest when Kim Whitcombe beat the off-side to fire past Haines on sixty five minutes. A fourth goal was disallowed late in the game for off-side but by then M Moneyfields were already comfortable winners of the tie.
