Woodley make it three wins in a row

Woodley United 5 (3) v Spelthorne Sports 1 (0)

Woodley wrapped up their home league season with a comprehensive win against Spelthorne Sports, who ensured their survival in the division with a win earlier in the week.  In securing the win, Woodley ensured they finished fourth place in the league table and visit third place Brook House in the promotion play-off semi-final.

Kicking towards the River Thames end, it took United only six minutes to open the scoring.  Kaylum Barlow’s corner kick saw Archie Simpson’s header parried by visiting goalkeeper Ben Grummitt with Simpson reacting quickest to prod the ball over the goal line.

The lead was doubled eleven minutes later when Dontae Hamblin received the ball on the right touchline from Barlow, turned a defender before making a defence splitting pass to Connor Suckling to steer the ball pass Grummitt in a one on one situation.

Hamblin then got in on the goalscoring act, receiving the ball from Suckling, running past two defenders to enter the penalty and strike the ball past Grummitt in the twenty eight minute.

Sports offered little trouble to the home defence except one shot late in the half that required Joe Hill to turn away for a corner kick.

Woodley made five substitutions early in the second half, two of who scored.  Within five minutes of being introduced Enow Ojong scored when a defender’s attempted clearance from Marco DeSousa’s cross fell to the unmarked Ojong to score from close range in the fifty fifth minute.  Ojong was denied a second shortly afterwards, having outrun a defender saw his goal bound shot cleared by the right foot of Grummitt for a corner kick.

Moving the ball with ease Woodley controlled much of the second half, but despite creating several goal scoring chances, only one was converted when Lucas Taplin received a pass from George Day to shot low from a tight angle pass Grummitt into the inside far netting.

The game ended with Fuad Banire scoring a well taken consolation goal for Spelthorne, curling the ball from the left into the top left hand corner of Hill’s net on the stroke of half time.
