U13 Mohawks off to a Flyer

U13 Mohawks off to a flyer!
The U13 Mohawks opened their season with a hard-fought win over newly promoted side Henley Hawks. In mid-summer like conditions and on their first competitive game on a full size 11-a-side pitch the team put in a fantastic performance to come back from a goal down to secure all three points.

It was slightly against the run of play when Henley opened the scoring from a speculative long range lob into the box which looped over Matt in goal who wasn’t helped by the sun glaring from above!
The introduction of Mackenzie, Ollie and Max gave us fresh legs and we began to put a period of pressure onto the Henley back four. Emmanuel managed to get into good goalscoring positions on three occasions, but he couldn’t quite find his shooting boots with his efforts sailing high and wide. The pressure finally paid off when Mackenzie made a great run into the box to coolly finish into the far corner. 1-1 HT.

Tired legs began to show but the team carried on where they left off with a good period of pressure. A great run down the left from Ollie resulted in a great cross for Emmanuel to finish from close range. Mohawks switched off from the kick-off and shortly after taking the lead Henley were back on level terms with a well taken close-range effort from within a crowded box giving Matt no chance in goal.

Far from deterred, Mohawks upped the tempo and created further great chances hitting both the post and crossbar before finally taking the lead, Emmanuel with a stunning strike from the edge of the box into the top corner, a contender for goal of the season.

The defence were worked hard once again after taking the lead but Bradley, Alex, Alfie and Sam ably protected by Gerry, George and Ammar in the middle stood strong, reducing Henley to long range efforts which Matt dealt with superbly in goal.
Mohawks lost the impressive Max and Nadim to injuries as the heat began to take its toll but with Henley also tiring, Kai, Ollie and Emmanuel began to break from midfield with ease, finally killing the game off with Emmanuel completing his hat-trick with minutes to spare, this time following up after a good save from the Henley keeper.
