United fly high at Bedfont

Bedfont 1 (0) Woodley United 2 (0)

On a blustery afternoon with a strong cross wind blowing across the pitch and under the flight path of Heathrow airport, United became the first team this season to take points at The Orchard where Bedfont had won their previous five home league games.

The opening five minutes saw both teams have crosses land on the roof of their opponents’ net while Troy Williams, who was lively all match, run on to a Harvey Collins pass only to see a last gasp clearance by a defender as the forward prepared to take on home goalkeeper George Armstrong in a one on one situation.

Woodley went on to force three corners in the first nine minutes of the match as they showed their intent to attack the Bedfont goal.

The hosts best chance came in the sixteenth minute following a shot going wide after Williams had headed clear a corner kick to the edge of the visitors’ penalty area.  On the half hour a Bedfont cross resulted in Eden Downes heading the ball into the path of Cyril Ocansey who shot over Joe Hill’s cross bar.

With Bedfont making use of the wind advantage, United defended well to see the half end goalless.

The hosts took the lead four minutes into the second half.  United conceded a free kick on the edge of their penalty area, which was cleared wide only for the ball to be crossed into the penalty area, where a suspiciously looking off-side Jatinder Liddar was allowed to score unchallenged.

Undeterred by the goal, Woodley continued to play positively and prevented Bedfont from creating any momentum following the goal to the extent that Hill had little to do for the remainder of the match.

Kaylum Barlow saw a low shot smothered by Armstrong in the seventy fifth minute and three minutes later the same player passed to Nico Cammock, whose turn of pace deceived Armstrong into fouling the wing back and conceding a penalty kick which Dylan Clark converted.

Barlow was involved in the decisive goal with five minutes of normal time remaining when his low cross when player manager Charlie Lawrence turned the ball into his own net past a despairing Armstrong.

United went on to comfortably control the remaining five minutes of play and six minutes stoppage time to secure the win and end the day the only team still unbeaten in the division.
