Another second half collapse mars home defeat

Woodley Town welcomed back manager, Craig Hiscock, and a number of players from last year's team for this Hellenic Division 1 East fixtue.

With captain Mike Alleyne suspended, Louie Tallett brought in Jake Brooks for his debut and keeper Ash Smith took over the armband. Deshawn Whittaker started a first team match for the first time, having just appeared once previously away at Chinnor.

Jake Brooks' left footed delivery at corners gave Henley defenders plenty to think about and, in the 7th minute, led to a half chance for Omar Cofie but his shot skewed wide.

Another cross from Jordan four minutes later presented Gareth Davies with a far post header. The chance came to nothing and Henley broke quickly down the left. With the defence reeling, the ball was laid back to Matt Godwin who smashed it home with his left foot.

Despite this setback, the home side continued to work hard all round the park, with Iain Graham looking effective. His shot from distance flew over the bar but a minute later Whittaker and Goddard combined well down the left and Ashley East in the Henley goal did well to divert the ensuing cross. Another half chance was created from a swinging Brooks corner but James Pheby's header went wide.

On 40 minutes, Henley nearly doubled their advantage when a goalbound header was somehow saved and, despite a goal line scramble, the ball was eventually cleared from danger.

In the second half, an early Henley goal appeared to change the game. It was a thirty yard screamer from the right foot of Matt Godwin that gave Smith no chance. Thereafter, the home side seemed to tire and lose their self-belief.

Henley took advantage of this with some excellent finishes. Sam Cripps ran virtually the full length of the pitch after Woodley had threatened with a free kick near the Henley box. The chasing defenders couldn't catch Cripps and he slotted coolly past Smith to make it 3-0.

The fourth came from Karl Simms who fired through a tattered defence. Brett Rann came on as a sub and scored within minutes, collecting a great pass from Godwin and finishing with aplomb. The sixth goal was from a simple goal kick, Craig Blissett missing the ball on the bounce and Louis Howell was presented with a tap in after Cripps' run and pass.

Woodley continued to battle and came close to scoring when a Pheby header from a Brooks corner was diverted over the bar by East.

During the second half, the home side made three substitutions, Jez West replacing Gareth Davies, Simon Griffiths replacing Cofie and Jim Davies replacing Whittaker.

The fresh legs couldn't help raise the Woodley Town performance and the match finished 0-6 and a comprehensive victory for Henley.

Woodley Town has another home league match this Saturday v Chinnor, with a 2.15pm kick off.
