Lemar Maycock headed Matt Leigh’s cross over the bar after two minutes while Lee Wheeler forced a save from Simon Stainsby moments later. However, Town were unable to maintain the momentum and where punished after eighteen minutes when Jim Davies’ mistake was punished to allow Tommy Cameron to open the scoring in a one on one position.
As is often the case one goal is followed by another and so it was four minutes later when Chezney Cassell headed home a Luke Heneghan corner and on the half hour Cassell added his second when he fired in off the far post.
Town steadied themselves and reduced the deficit when skipper Dan Watkiss’ free klck was deflected into the visitors net after thirty five minutes. Buoyed by the goal Town continued to press and were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty shortly before the break when Jim Davies’ was manhandled in the opponents penalty area at a corner kick.
As with the first half Woodley started the second period well but conceded a fourth on fifty seven minutes when man of the match Heneghan was allowed to run at the Town defence and curl his shot inside the post. The same player completed the scoring with eleven minutes of the match remaining direct from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area.
In many ways a frustrating Town performance with that saw good passages of play and strong performances from Max Brown, Watkiss and Leigh interspersed by passages of poor play and it is the need to improve consistency throughout the whole game that will be the challenge for the New Year.
