With the two teams directly above them not playing Woodley miss the chance to close gap as relegation battle continues

United went into their third game in five days on the back of their biggest win of the season. Unfortunately they could not match Thursday's performance going down to a one goal defeat against Ascot.

Despite the visitors having a lot of possession in the early stages, it was Woodley who had the game's first shot. Toby Bridges' well struck shot from at least twenty five yards was straight at Lee Allen in the away goal.

Fifteen minutes in saw Ascot awarded a very soft penalty when Ben Hall went down in the box. Despite going the right way, Woodley keeper Alex Reed couldn't replicate his heroics of Thursday evening as Jonny Denton put his side in front.

Looking for an equaliser, Danny Horscroft didn't give up on an Owen Davies pass down the left channel. Putting Allen, who was well out of his box, under pressure Horscroft won his side a corner that didn't clear the first man.

Both teams were struggling to create many chances, with set pieces the most likely to yield opportunities. United had several corners whilst Ascot saw two right wing free kicks well held by Reed.

Looking to freshen things up, Davies and Carl Prestidge swapped wings with the former now on the left. This nearly paid off immediately when a quickly taken Prestidge throw found right back Sam Guze who picked out Davies with a low cross. Under pressure from an Ascot defender Davies miss-kicked his shot.

Woodley made a double change at the break; Dave Morgan replaced Abdul Kamara in the middle of the park whilst Toby Briggs came on for Haydon Richardson up front.

United came within inches of an equaliser on fifty minutes when Prestidge, who was back on the left, volleyed an inch perfect cross to Bridges' who saw his header cannon back off the right post.

The home side were looking much better since the restart. Bridges' short corner to Guze saw the latter beat a man before fizzing in a cross that Briggs couldn't get under control.

Woodley made their final change on fifty seven minutes. Prestidge made way for Jake Nicholls.

With twenty five minutes to go, Reed made a very good save to keep out a James Richardson shot from the left side of the box.

The hosts' final chance came two minutes later when Horscroft volleyed over a difficult chance, whilst a Denton free kick missed to the left and a curling Rob Lazarczuk effort landed on the roof of Reed's net as chances for both teams were few and far between.

Despite throwing centre back Mitch Cooper up top for the final ten minutes United couldn't test Allen any further as Ascot avenged their 3-1 loss in the away fixture.

A bad afternoon for United was capped off at the final whistle when Davies was shown a straight red card for dissent.
