Woodley end run of three straight defeats with victory at Ascot

Woodley got off to the perfect start under new manager James Anderson with a fine performance away at Ascot. First half goals from Jaydyn Englefield and Nathanael Robinson plus a second half strike from Jake Nicholls saw United run out 3-1 winners.

The first chance of the match went Woodley's way courtesy of a nice move on the right. Full back Luke Turner's clipped ball down the wing picked out Danny Horscroft, who in turn found Nicholls. From a tight angle on the right the midfielder saw his low cross blocked on practically the goal line.

A Robinson free kick then reached Owen Davies free at the back post; unfortunately the winger miss-kicked a difficult chance. Minutes later a second Robinson free kick was headed over by Horscroft as Woodley took a grip on the game.

Twenty four minutes in saw the visitors take a deserved lead with a sublime individual goal from Englefield. Cutting in from the right the young winger beat a defender, rounded Tim Amoui in the home goal before firing a low shot into the right corner.

The lead was doubled two minutes later when Robinson latched onto a Horscroft flick on; bearing down on goal he beat Amoui from just inside the box.

Ascot then had by far their best spell of the match. It was credit to Woodley's defence and keeper that they went in at the break with their lead intact. George Lock wriggled clear of his marker before testing Woodley keeper Alex Reed with a shot from the left side of the box.

Reed was then called into action, diving to his right to deny a well struck effort by Ascot skipper Rob Lazarczuk. The hosts did pull one back just before the half hour when striker Cameron Gyeabour headed a pinpoint cross by Lock into the top left corner.

Ascot's final chance of the half came courtesy of a throw in on the right. The ball eventually fell to Lee Riddell who was thwarted by a last ditch tackle by Woodley's Idris Kamara.

At the other end Englefield had a shot from the right blocked by a defender.

The second half started with a flurry of Woodley chances. Nicholls missed to the left from twenty five yards whist Robinson headed a Joe Barley cross wide.

Englefield was then denied a second when a defender blocked a certain goal before Ashley Ledger saw his shot go wide of the left post.

Just before the hour Woodley got a third when Nicholls found the right corner with a controlled strike from the left of the box. Reacting quickest to Robinson hitting the left post from a free kick the United man got his second of the season and restored United's two goal cushion.

Woodley made a change two minutes after the goal when Greg Beckett replaced Englefield.

Mid way through the half saw Woodley gifted another set piece this time slightly further out than the one that resulted in the goal. Stepping up Robinson had his shot saved in the top right corner.

It wasn't all one way traffic though as Reed pulled off a crucial save to keep out a low effort from the impressive Lock.

Robinson's delivery from set pieces was causing the home side all kinds of problems. Captain Kamara came within inches of turning home a Horscroft header following a left wing corner.

With ten minutes left Ascot had a goal ruled out after a push before Woodley made a second change when Davies made way for Carl Prestidge.

The change nearly paid off immediately when Prestidge timed his run well to latch onto a perfectly weighted Ledger through ball; with just Amoui to beat he rolled agonisingly wide of the right post.

Woodley's two subs then created the game's final chance but were denied a well worked goal by a save from Amoui. Beckett found Prestidge who broke through the Ascot defence; looking up he rolled the ball back to Beckett who was thwarted by Amoui's legs.

FT Ascot United 1-3 Woodley United

After the game I caught up with Woodley's new manager.

James

'It was a great team performance today. The boys were playing for each other and with a real freedom which was great to see.

Defensively we looked as good as we have done all season with the back four and Alex superb.

The work rate from Danny and Nat both offensively and defensively went a long way to us winning the match.

Our target is thirty points which we think will be enough to stay up and we are nearly a third of the way there.

We have a busy schedule coming up and are hoping to get another positive result on Tuesday'.
