Sam Cripps, Adam Jeffrey

Woodley met Holyport who lead the way in the Hellenic Division 1 East and in good form chasing the league title. However, the home side were to receive a dent to their championship hopes as Woodley came away with a second win in two seasons from Summerleaze running out 2 - 1 victors.

Woodley started with a new formation that saw Dominic Mackenzie and Henry Durrant coming in to the side and it had the desired effect as Holyport were under pressure early on.

Warren Baxter had a header from eight yards flying goal wards, but the Holyport defender unwittingly blocked it with his face and required treatment. Sam Cripps was troubling the home defence with his powerful runs and Adam Jeffrey had a couple of half chances from wide areas. Mackenzie was unlucky not to score when his header, under pressure, went just wide with the keeper stranded.

Holyport had a good period just before the half-time break. Dan Rapley found rare space in the Woodley penalty area and Oneal Garnes made a decent save with his legs. Jamie Handscombe thought he had scored the opening goal when he lifted the ball into the net whilst lying on the floor, but he had gone in studs up on Garnes to get the ball and was penalised for the challenge. Handscombe also had a header go over the bar and just before the break while Holyport skipper Carl Reeves received a heavy knock to the head and did not reappear for the second half.

Holyport's re shuffle made them look more vulnerable at the back, but Rapley had a glorious chance at full stretch from a Hanscombe cross but it went over the bar.

Woodley took the lead as indecision at the back was punished with Mackenzie prodding the ball forward and Cripps reacting quickest to lift the ball over the advancing keeper on forty eight minutes.

Holyport came back at Woodley and got a perfect opportunity to draw level when Paul Holloway was adjudged to have taken down a player as he tried to clear the ball. Handscombe placed the penalty kick to Garnes' left and Holyport were back in the game seven minutes later.

The game flowed back and forth with both side keen on taking maximum points. Garnes took an unintended lob at full stretch, substitute Danny Isaiew had a wonderful chance as the ball broke in the area but he blazed over.

Dan Jewell, who had defended well all game, had one long range effort go just over the bar, but it was Jeffrey who got the winner for Woodley. His viciously struck free kick from twenty five yards took the slightest touch from a defender and hit the back of the net with one minute remaining.

Woodley saw out the rest of the game comfortably and now look to go on a run in the final period of the season, starting with Didcot Town Reserves away on Tuesday night.

Garnes, Jewell, Durrant, Edwards, Thomas, Baxter, Jeffrey, Holloway, Fairchild (Nightingale), Cripps, MacKenzie (Isaiew) Subs not used: Goddard, Hiscock Attendance: 64
