Oakley nets his fifth of the season in added time to cap deserved victory

United racked up their third league win in a row in a thoroughly dominant display at Hellenic Division One East new boys AFC Aldermaston on Saturday.

Woodley started well, finding the net in the first two minutes; unfortunately Josh Drew's strike was ruled out for offside. Moments later Danny Horscroft picked out Charlie Oakley who saw his header kept out by a combination of keeper and multiple defenders.

More early pressure from United followed with both Greg Beckett and Dave Morgan unable to test ex Woodley goalie Dan Smith in the home net. A Drew cross from the right saw an Oakley effort deflect wide. The resultant corner picked out Idris Kamara who had his header cleared.

Just before the half hour United got a deserved goal when Drew set up Horscroft who scored from close range before a great tackle by Michael Porter denied Oakley doubling Woodley's lead.

At the other end, a rare foray into the United half saw Kai Parton-Edey force Alex Reed into an easy stop.

More last ditch defending kept it at one nil when Martin King robbed Oakley after the Woodley forward got on the end of a superb Jake Nicholls pass.

The second half started with more United chances. Nicholls found Drew with a left wing cross, who in turn set up Oakley who forced Smith to save diving to his left. Centre back Joe Barley then picked out Oakley with the pass of the match; shrugging off a challenge, he shot over when well placed.

Between those chances Aldermaston sub Craig Masterson should have done better with a free header following a left wing corner.

With twenty four minutes to go, Woodley made a change when Drew made way for Teddy Thomas.

United were playing really good football, the passing and movement were very crisp. Nicholls' energy was first rate; he was everywhere. Getting to the byline, he picked out Beckett who hit his shot well from eight yards but saw it parried away by Smith.

A double change followed with nine minutes left. Abdul Kamara and Toby Briggs replaced Beckett and Morgan.

In added time Woodley sealed the points when Horscroft found Oakley who cut in from the right before beating Smith with a low shot.

FT AFC Aldermaston 0-2 Woodley United

After the game I chatted to joint captain Idris Kamara about several topics.

On life at Woodley:

'Best atmosphere I have ever experienced at any club I have played for. The camaraderie is excellent; we work really hard for each other and dig deep. Our start to the season has been great, winning all three league games and playing really well.'

On team mates Danny Horscroft and today's man of the match Danny Greenwood:

'Danny G was exceptional today; his all round game was fantastic and deserved to be named man of the match. Danny H had another good game. He is a great playmaker who does the hard parts well.'

On the sides to beat in Hellenic Division One East:

'Penn & Tylers Green are a very good side, Headington have started well whilst Bicester also look a decent team.'
