Crazy start to the second half sees first team lose out at Chinnor

Woodley went into the game at Chinnor looking for their first win since the start of October. Unfortunately an incredible spell of goals just after half time saw United slip to a heavy defeat; but positives can be taken as a nine minute spell after the break aside, it was an even game.

Woodley started well in windy conditions. Striker Pete Wareing picked up the ball just inside the Chinnor half; using strength and pace he raced clear of the home defence before narrowly missing to the right from the left side of the box.

Ten minutes in and it looked like the home side had gone ahead when John McMahon coolly finished from twenty yards. Luckily the linesman's flag saved Woodley. Moments later a looping Matt Tallyn shot just went over Woodley keeper Pete Davies' bar.

The game was end to end; United debutant Dan Mcleod-Walker slid Ryan Szram in on the right, the Woodley winger got a low shot off that was well saved. Continuing to press, a well struck Rupen Limbu effort from twenty yards went wide.

Fifteen minutes gone and a miss kick from Davies following a backpass presented James Bonwick a chance to open the scoring. With his back to goal he improvised a shot goalwards that was cleared off the line by Woodley centre back Ollie Bridges.

Just after the midway point of the first half, the home side went down to ten men when Bonwick appeared to stamp on Mcleod-Walker after the two tangled.

Looking to make the most of their numbers advantage, Woodley surged forward. A Matt Brookling shot was saved before the same player had a goal ruled out for offside. Seven minutes before the break and the game had its third goal ruled out when Wareing turned home a Jordan Phillip cross after a quick Woodley counter. Once again offside was the decision.

The sides went into half time ten aside when Limbu was harshly shown a straight red for a high tackle on McMahon three minutes before the break.

HT Chinnor 0-0 Woodley United

The second half stated with a wave of Chinnor shots that left Woodley rattled and needing a miracle to salvage anything. Stuart MacLellan forced Davies into a decent stop before the floodgates well and truly opened. First a long throw from the left was turned in from close range by Steve Newell after a near post knock on.

Three minutes later and seven since the restart saw the hosts double their lead. A swift counter ended with Tallyn placing a shot into the right corner from the edge of the box. Two minutes later and Chinnor made it three with the goal of the game: MacLellan struck his shot sweetly and it flew into the top right corner from twenty five yards.

Looking for a lifeline, Woodley full back Zack Pearce saw his shot blocked before another counter from the hosts saw them increase their lead further when McMahon slotted home.

Just past the hour and Woodley made their first change when Kriss Hemmings replaced Phillip. This saw Woodley change formation: Hemmings joined Bridges and captain Chris Burt in a three man defence.

Chinnor continued to look for more goals. Good play by McMahon freed up space for himself just outside the box; fortunately for Woodley his curling effort went wide. Then, minutes later Chinnor sub Mark Jones shot just over from twenty yards.

Down the other end Woodley never gave up and carried on fighting. A nice move involving Mcleod-Walker, Brookling and Wareing ended with the latter missing to the right from a tight angle.

With sixteen minutes to go United made another change when Fraser Mowat came on for Mcleod-Walker. Four minutes later Chinnor came within inches of further increasing their lead when Tallyn hit the right post.

United made their final change with ten minutes left when Burt made way for Graham High. The game ended with both sides shooting over before Mowat was cautioned for a late challenge.
