Danny Isaiew 2, Luke Williams

Didcot Town Reserves came to East Park Farm on the back of some good goal scoring form in the league and they beat Woodley in the same fixture last season.

Woodley had a dream start to the game though and when Danny Isaiew closed down a back pass on the right edge of the penalty area, he had the ball fired into him by keeper Iain McCulley and it rebounded into the back of the Didcot goal with only three minutes played.

Adam Jeffrey was threatening down the flanks and Luke Williams was also asking plenty of questions of the back line and when the latter's cross found Jeffrey at the far post, the wide man's shot was helped in by Isaiew who got his second of the game fifteen minutes later. Paul Holloway was impressing on his first start in midfield throughout and controlled the flow of the game.

Didcot were reeling and Woodley kept the pressure on as balls flashed across the Didcot goal. Isaiew almost secured a hat-trick as his neat turn saw him bearing down on the Didcot keeper, but his shot was inches wide.

The away side did regain composure and had the better of the last ten minutes of the half. Woodley lost James Varndell to a ligament injury and conceded moments later as centre forward Danny Cox neatly finished from Gregg Beckett’s the pull back. Williams almost got the third goal straight from the kick off as his drive narrowly missed the target from distance while Beckett’s lob cum shot was safely gathered by Impey Cooke – Chowdhray in the final seconds of the half.

The second half saw an even contest as the sides searched for the crucial next goal in the context of the game.

Woodley were gifted the goal that put the game out of reach for Didcot. A Williams’ free kick looked as though it would be a routine catch for McCulley but he spilled the ball and it dropped over the goal line ten minutes into the half.

Woodley should have added to the scoreline as Isaiew flicked a cross just past the far post and Williams somehow failed to score after doing all the hard work to get through on goal but he skewed his shot wide.

Most of the Didcot attacks broke down and the threat was minimal apart from one Cox effort which he pulled wide. Substitute Sam Cripps had a shot blocked when in a promising position but Woodley comfortably saw out the game and now return to cup action with a first competitive derby against Reading Town at East Park Farm on 23rd October 2010.
