Woodley sank to their first defeat of the season and their heaviest for nearly three years at the hands of Chalfont Wasps at home. It was the second meeting of the season for the two clubs and Chalfont left East Park Farm with an impressive 4 - 1 victory after Woodley contributed to their own downfall.
The home side started very brightly and pushed Chalfont back in the opening ten minutes with some attractive football. However, the away side took the lead though with their first foray forward. Two uncharacteristic mistakes from the usually reliable Warren Baxter, led to Chalfont racing to a two goal lead within twelve minutes of the kick off. A straight ball was partially cut out and Booby Hughes pounced on the mistake and scored from twelve yards. The second came directly from a misplaced pass on the edge of the area and Kieran Webb took full advantage to round Imran Cooke - Chowdhary and score into the empty net.
It took a last ditch tackle by Richard Thomas on Hughes, after he had out run Jim Nightingale, to prevent the forward scoring his sides third on fourteen minutes.
Woodley regained composure and continued to dominate the possession with Luke Williams hitting two shots wide from the edge of the area after mazy runs. The same player forced a great intervention from the Chalfont keeper Chris Tullett. The cross was flashed across goal for the queue of Woodley players and somehow Tullett diverted the ball clear of danger. The goal did come for the home side as another flowing move ended with Jamie Fairchild crossing for Danny Isaiew six yards out and when his effort was blocked and struck his hand, Luke Williams was on hand to fire in the rebound.
Woodley felt they dominated the first half but the two mistakes had cost them dearly and the second half started with a more determined Chalfont not withstanding Fairchild’s flicked header going straight across goal requiring just the final touch.
A fired a free kick was drilled into the Town penalty area from twenty give yards out had struck the wall and from the rebound Matt Skinner the volleyed shot flew through a crowd and into the net on fifty three minutes.
Fred Trip then saw his shot go wide on fifty five minutes with just the Town stopper to beat.
The goal deflated Woodley and Chalfont grew in confidence and controlled the game for large periods. Chalfont's Hughes was particularly threatening in advanced areas throughout the game and he scored the fourth when another Woodley error from the covering Dan Jewell set up the player to score neatly.
Woodley had their fourth player of the season sent from the field as Richard Thomas was given a second yellow for using excessive force in his challenge that saw him win the ball and the resulting free kick was inches too high of the angle of bar and post and Woodley were hanging on.
The game was up but there were more chances in the game. Luke Williams had efforts go wide from distance and Isaiew was one-on-one from a tight angle and had his shot blocked and Chalfont were thwarted by Cooke-Chowdhary with a good save.
Woodley were disappointed to have given a good side three goals from errors, but can take positives from their general first half display to take with them to Farnborough Reserves next Saturday.
