Second half goals seal first league win of 2015

Both teams started the game slowly; neither being able to create any real momentum on a very heavy pitch. The first half chance went to Henley when a Sean Moore free kick from the left was scrambled clear by the home defence. Town left back Jordan Goddard then showed good anticipation to win back possession from Louis Howell who had cut in from the left flank.

It took till the fifteenth minute before the first save of the game; Henley keeper Ashley East did well to save Jon Malone's shot from twenty yards in the bottom right corner. At the other end a slip by Town full back Andres Rodriguez gifted Moore possession just outside the Woodley box. The former was able to recover and a combination of him and Goddard were able to clear.

Twenty minutes gone and Town captain Gary Smith was booked for a hefty challenge deep in the Woodley half whilst a David Stevens free kick from twenty five yards failed to trouble East. Another free kick, this time for the visitors was whipped in from the right by Moore; Gary Smith was able to get a toe on it which only directed it towards goal, fortunately Town keeper Dan Smith was able to get a fist to it and it was eventually hacked clear by centre back Stuart Doe.

Two minutes before the break and Town were forced into an early change when Rodriguez had to go off injured. He was replaced by Tafari Downes who went to play on the right wing with Malone dropping back into defence. It was a fantastic run by the versatile Malone that nearly set up striker Steven Campbell but he was thwarted by the Henley defence before the former got back well to stop Howell bursting through.

That ended a half devoid of much goalmouth action.

HT Woodley Town 0-0 Henley Town

The first attack after the break resulted in Town taking the lead. A throw in on the right found Adam Cashin-Murray who set up Downes, he drove into the box before laying the ball off to Stevens who expertly curled a left footer from 12 yards out of the reach of East and into the bottom left corner.

Looking for an immediate response, Henley pushed forward, Stuart Doe first headed clear then blocked a Moore shot from the left side of the box before an Asa Povey effort flashed wide of the left post. Town's Cashin-Murray then showed good strength to get away from his marker; driving forward he played in Campbell who was denied by East who was off his line quickly to gather.

Sixty three minutes gone and Woodley doubled their lead. This time Campbell got his foot on to a David Stevens through ball and lofted it over the onrushing East and into the net. The goal settled Town who never looked like giving up the lead. Downes was unlucky to see his well struck shot blocked after he bought it down beautifully.

It was Woodley sub Downes who was making the difference. The visitors could not deal with his pace on the right wing; his ball to Campbell was a little heavy but credit must go to East who was once again off his line quickly to thwart the Town striker.

Henley were getting desperate and resorting to ambitious shots from distance. Moore blazed well over from the left side of the box. With the game entering its final fifteen minutes Steven Campbell made way for George Dallarda before Town keeper Dan Smith made his most difficult stop of the afternoon, saving with his feet after a shot from close range following a corner on the right.

Woodley left winger Doug Groves was cautioned for pulling back his marker before making way for Max Brown. With the game entering stoppage time Henley captain Warren Baxter shot over prior to Town putting the icing on a deserved victory with a third goal. Another fantastic run down the right by Downes saw him get in his cross from a very tight angle that the visitors could only clear as far as Dallarda; the Town striker was able to compose himself twelve yards out and placed the ball into the bottom left corner to net Town their first league victory of the year.

Holding midfielder Adam Bygrave was man of the match for Woodley. Dominated the midfield winning headers, tackles and breaking up play. Communicated brilliantly and lead by example.
