Woodley faced Chalfont Wasps in the league in what had a scrappy opening to the game that required Ben Rose to prevent Wasps from opening the scoring in the first minute.
Carl Davies had Town’s first chance of the game when the away keeper Gary White’s goal kick went straight to his feet but the keeper redeemed himself and saved well to tip the ball around the post. Davies continued to feature prominently in Town’s attacks as he also headed a free kick wide while a free kick off his own deflected off the Wasps’ wall to narrowly miss the upright.
Town’s pressure finally paid on twenty minutes when Luke Williams passed to Davies who capitalised on another error in the Chalfont back line to open the scoring. The defender lost his footing and Davies calmly found the far corner to register a much needed goal for the striker.
Chalfont had their first chance since the opening of the match on thirty minutes as Woodley conceded possession from a slack Nick Edwards pass, but Rose saved with a strong hand at his near post. Chalfont had another effort go high and wide but Woodley had the better of the chances.
Paul Wilder thought he had scored from a Williams’ corner which he headed goal wards, but the defender cleared off of his line. Dan Jewell hit an effort from range that clipped the post, Williams had a half volley well saved following a corner and debutant Chris Hutton, had a shot tipped over as it travelled towards the top corner.
Only a goal down Chalfont started the second half brightly and forced Rose into a good save early on. Woodley were laboured in their play and Chalfont equalised when Tom Sneddon was allowed to run unmarked to head in a cross to give Rose no chance on fifty five minutes. Town responded well with Jewell shooting wide after a mazy run before Richard Thomas twice prevented Wasps’ Fred Tripp from giving his team the lead.
As the weather worsened the quality of the game dropped, but Woodley took the lead again with twenty five minutes remaining through Craig Hiscock. A dangerous set piece from Davies was knocked into the air and Hiscock struck the ball through the crowd from close range and into the net..
Woodley had chances to extend their lead. Williams raced down on goal with the keeper to beat but White saved well.
Woodley also defended well at times, but with the light fading and the clock showing a minute remaining, Chalfont equalised. From a Town corner a long punt from White was only flicked backwards by Edwards and the home defence were flat footed as Tom Keill lobbed Rose and the ball bounced just beyond Jim Nightingale and went in to make the final result a disappointing two all draw.
On a positive note, Town moved one place up the league table to ninth position and have only lost once in eight league matches.
