Penalties needed to separate the two teams.

United won through to the second round of the BBFA Senior Cup by defeating league rivals Abingdon United 4-2 on penalty kicks after the match finished level at one all at full time.

While Joe Barley scored the all-important penalty with the five kick, it was goalkeeper Alex Reed who was man of the match with some fine saves during the game and saving Abingdon’s third kick diving to his left.

The first half was an entertaining affair with both teams playing good football and creating chances and finished goalless at the break.

The second started with the visitors enjoying good pressure and taking the lead on the hour mark when Kyle Moss’s header from a corner defected of Joe Barley.

Following the introduction of Jake White and Callum Samuel-Harman, Woodley gradually wrestled the initiative from the visitors forcing a number of corners and free kicks into the Abingdon penalty area that agonising eluded sky blue shirts or where cleared.

Substitute White scored the equaliser from twenty five yards when his shot gathered pace along the damp surface to beat a diving Edward Cavanagh in the away goal.

With no extra time in this competition, the match went to penalty kicks with Woodley winning the toss to go first. Both teams scored their opening two (White and Ashley Ledger) and failed on the third kicks. Jake Nicholls converted Woodley’s fourth while Abingdon put their kick over the cross bar thus enabling Barley to score the important winning kick.

Woodley face Step 4 Evo-Stik League South East Beaconsfield Town in the next round.

Reed, Barley, Goddard (White), Nichols, I Kamara, Cooper, Hinds, Ledger, Beckett, (Wilson), Horscroft, O Davies ((Samuel-Harmen)
