Late heartbreak for Woodley

United exited the Supplementary Cup in the first round at Hellenic Premier side Royal Wootton Basset. Over the two hours Woodley more than matched their opponents and showed that if they did achieve promotion they could hold their own at step five.

The hosts had the first half chance of the game when a cross come shot from the left was cleared on the goal line by Joe Barley.

Woodley then took over, creating the majority of chances in the first half. On four minutes Charlie Oakley gave the visitors the lead when he found the right corner from twenty two yards. Minutes later United came within inches of doubling their lead when Danny Horscroft headed against the bar; the ball dropped to Oakley who saw his well hit shot blocked, taking all the power off and allowing Curtis Meare to save.

Eighteen minutes in, a lovely Woodley move involving Jake Nicholls, Greg Beckett and Horscroft ended with the latter forcing Meare into a good stop.

More United pressure followed. Beckett missed to the right before winger Carl Prestidge had a shot saved in the left corner.

Royal Wootton Bassett were struggling to create anything. A frustrating half for them ended with Dan Comer seeing his shot from the left side of the box easily saved by debutant James McKimm.

McKimm was called into action early in the second half but once again the save was routine; Dale Richards shot from twenty yards was straight at the United keeper.

Ten minutes after the restart Woodley had a golden chance to extend their lead. Cutting in from the left Beckett found Horscroft who turned his marker freeing up space only to see his low shot saved by Meare. The ball fell invitingly to Oakley who shot over.

On sixty five minutes United made a change when Dave Morgan replaced Abdul Kamara.

Woodley were playing well, looking the more dangerous of the two sides. A Beckett pull back found Oakley who saw his shot saved by Meare diving to his left.

Most of the United pressure was coming down the left; Oakley and Beckett once again combined with the former seeing his shot from the left side of the box blocked by Liam Edmondson.

Woodley made another change on seventy six minutes; Teddy Thomas came on for Prestidge.

The next ten minutes saw Royal Wootton Bassett have a lot of the ball but couldn't test McKimm.

With a minute to go United made their final change when Beckett made way for Liam Wilson.

In injury time Nicholls sent Thomas clear on the right; getting to the ball before the onrushing Meare, the Woodley sub saw his shot from twenty five yards agonisingly miss to the right.

With the game in the ninety fifth minute, the hosts cruelly denied United a cup scalp when Steve Robertson fired into the right corner from the left side of the box.

Extra time started with Royal Wootton Bassett's Dan Bailey blazing over before Dave Morgan tested Meare from just outside the box.

The late equaliser could have seen Woodley heads drop but they still looked lively in the final third. A Thomas cross from the right was headed over by Oakley.

Royal Wootton Basset then went ahead and once again it was Robertson; bringing the ball down in the box with a delicate touch he placed the ball past McKimm into the left corner.

United fought on, a dangerous Thomas cross was taken off the head of Oakley by Meare. The final chance of a game where Woodley did themselves proud fell to Thomas. Unfortunately the Woodley sub saw his shot blocked.
