Superb Horscroft strike sees United go through after extra time

United went into their Perpetua Press Hellenic Floodlit Cup first round match at Sandhurst Town on Tuesday evening looking to maintain their winning start to the season and in the process progress to the second round for the first time.

The hosts started well having a lot of the ball early on; despite them dominating possession the best they could muster were shots from Jack Naerger and Tom Cooper that failed to test Alex Reed in the Woodley goal.

Mid way through the half saw the best chance of the game so far fall to Sandhurst's Will Shaw. Picking up a ball over the top he got to the ball before Reed and prodded goalwards; the ball rolled just wide of the left post however United captain and man of the match Irdis Kamara had got back to clear if the shot had been on target.

It took till the twenty fifth minute for Woodley to register their first shot. Charlie Oakley shot over from twenty yards. Four minutes later the home side went ahead when Joe Barley put into his own net from a right wing corner.

The goal woke United up, Josh Drew forced Matt Watson into a routine save before Woodley winger Kaser Chowdhary showed good skill to get past his marker before going down in the box. The ref waved off the penalty claims.

United got back on level terms four minutes before the break when a Danny Horscroft shot was spilled by Watson into the path of Charlie Oakley who couldn't miss.

Woodley started the half brightly, Drew missed to the left whilst Chowdhary had a shot blocked by Sandhurst captain Harry Oakley. In between those chances the home side headed against the bar from close range.

On sixty five minutes United made a double change; Toby Briggs and Luke Turner replaced Chowdhary and Danny Greenwood.

More pressure from Woodley followed; a well hit shot by Joe Barley from twenty five yards missed to the left before a nice move ended with Jake Nicholls setting up Drew who shot over from close range. Nicholls then saw an effort flash past the left post as United started to dominate.

With fifteen minutes to go Woodley made their final change when Abdul Kamara made way for Jamie Smith.

Picking the ball up on the half way line Drew showed good acceleration to get clear of his man and drive down the left wing. Passing to Smith who in turn set up Oakley the United forward saw his well struck shot blocked by a last ditch tackle.

Woodley deservedly went ahead with six minutes left when Drew picked out Oakley who slotted into the right corner.

With the game in injury time Reed pulled off a good stop diving to his right. Then, in the fifth minute of added time a superb strike from Joe Bilson sent the game into extra time.

FT Sandhurst Town 2-2 Woodley United

In the opening stages Charlie Oakley had a goal ruled out for offside. Minutes later Oakley cut in from the right, after being tackled the ball fell to Drew who missed from three yards.

The home side were exhausted; Woodley were piling on the pressure. A fantastic ball by Nicholls picked out Drew whose first shot was saved and second effort cleared off the line!

United then had a real let off when a corner from the right fell to Naerger who shot over with the goal at his mercy.

Three minutes before a shoot out Reed made a remarkable save to keep Woodley in it; a cross from the right found a red shirt who saw his shot into the left corner brilliantly kept out.

Sixty seconds later Woodley won it with a superb strike. Jake Nicholls picked out Danny Horscroft who with the outside of his left boot found the top right corner.
