United create enough chances to win two games but lose out on penalties

Woodley went into today's BBFA County Intermediate Cup game against AFC Corinthians searching for their first victory of the season and their first goal since the opening day at Old Woodstock.

United started the game well, bossing possession and going close twice in the opening ten minutes thanks to set pieces by captain Jordan Goddard; however on both occasions the visitors were able to scramble clear.

Fifteen minutes in and Woodley were presented a golden opportunity to take the lead when Lemar Maycock picked out Seun Odusanya with a cut back; six yards out, the Woodley striker sliced wide.

Woodley continued to boss the game. Good link up play on the left between Rupin Limbu and Bevan Van Wyk saw the latter's cross cleared at the near post by Scott Duplot. The Corinthians defender then denied Omar Cofie after he picked up an Odusanya knock down.

The visitors' first chance fell in the twenty fifth minute, a Craig Wise shot from distance was no trouble for Harry Stiff in the Woodley goal. Six minutes later, Sean Berry forced Stiff into a decent stop after picking up a through ball.

Five minutes before the break saw Cofie find the net from the right side of the box; however it was ruled for offside. The half ended with a Conor Cregan shot from outside the box going narrowly over.

The second half started with a chance for the visitors. Kieran Chard missed to the left from the right side of the United box. AFC Corinthians then took the lead from the spot when Chard made no mistake from eighteen yards after Berry was tripped.

Looking for an immediate response Limbu narrowly shot over at the near post following a Goddard corner. Just before the hour Woodley made their first change, Javies Catlyn coming on for Cofie.

Woodley pressed on; a Limbu effort from the left side of the box was well saved by Tim Moore, then Odusanya showed good strength to win possession in the Corinthians box but could only shoot over.

Sixty four minutes in and Woodley got the equaliser that their possession merited. Rupen Limbu showed good anticipation to win the ball on the half way line; cutting in from the left wing he beat two men before firing a powerful shot into the right corner. Great individual goal!

Six minutes later saw United go ahead when a nice move ended with Catlyn tapping home from close range following a low Van Wyk cross. Woodley went in search of a third; Maycock set up Limbu who missed from eighteen yards.

Twelve minutes from time saw Maycock replaced by Jordan Phillip. Moore was again called into action to keep his side in the game. First he saved from Van Wyk then pulled off a blinding save to deny Limbu who was teed up by Odusanya. With the game winding down Woodley made their final change, Travis Cray replacing Zack Pearce.

With the game well into added time, Corinthians sent the game into extra time when Chard got his second, coolly finishing with a low shot after picking up a through ball.

The entire first half of extra time was played in the Corinthians half. Van Wyk tested Moore with a shot from distance before Craig Waite threw himself in front of a fierce strike from Catlyn.

Mid way through the first half of extra time and Woodley had their second goal of the game ruled out for offside when Luke Titcombe scored after a Van Wyk free kick cannoned off the underside of the bar.

The half ended with a Van Wyk header narrowly missing after getting on the end of a superb right wing cross from Phillip.

After changing ends Woodley continued to lay siege to the Corinthians goal. Oduasnya missed to the right from the left side of the box then shot wide from just outside the box.

So onto penalties... Woodley went first; Catlyn saw his shot saved in the right corner. The next three penalties all found the target. Goddard then had his penalty saved by Moore with his feet. Corinthians made no mistake with their next two penalties and went through 4-2.
