Man-of-the-match Jon Norris nets a brace but United still defeated
Woodley United failed to hang on to a 1-0 lead at half-time and ended up being defeated by top-of-the-table Eldon Celtic. Woodley got off to a flying start when the Eldon Celtic keeper couldn’t hang on to a Jon Norris corner. Ricky Benevento was first to react and fired his shot into the top of the net. Woodley did well to contain Eldon Celtic for the rest of the half and came close to going further ahead when Harvey Detenon’s free kick caught the top of the bar and went harmlessly for a goal kick. Eldon Celtic came out in the second half with a sense of purpose and scored two quick goals to edge themselves ahead. Woodley were guilty of sloppy possession midway through the second half and conceded 2 further goals to make the score 1-4. Woodley didn’t give in and were rewarded on 85 minutes with an excellent long range shot from man-of-the-match Norris giving the keeper no chance. Woodley’s spirits were lifted in the dying minutes when Matt Hayman was bundled over in the box and Norris calmly converted the penalty. Woodley couldn’t find the equaliser and the game finished 3-4 to Eldon Celtic.
