Danny Blatchford man-of-the-match performance a winner for United
Woodley United hit top form with a convincing 5-2 victory over fellow Reading & District Sunday Football League Premier Division side Mortimer. Woodley got off to a flying start on 10 minutes when Pete Shay’s pinpoint through ball found Rob Timbers who then slotted the ball between the Mortimer keeper’s legs. Shay was involved in the second goal 5 minutes later when his long-range short was fumbled by the keeper and man-of-the-match and skipper Danny Blatchford followed up to bundle the ball into the net. Woodley threatened to take the game out of Mortimer’s grasp on 20 minutes when a corner from Blatchford was met by the towering Murray Dick who headed it into the goal off the cross bar. Woodley were guilty of being complacent on the half-hour and nearly let Mortimer back in the game when they conceded two goals in quick succession. Woodley continued their dominance in the second half and were rewarded on 60 minutes when Blatchford made the goal of the game by dribbling through the Mortimer midfield and defence to square the ball for a simple tap-in by Shay. Shay got his brace on 70 minutes when a neat interchange between himself and Jon Norris set the ball up nicely for his long-range shot to fly into the top left-hand corner off the post.
