Excellent Defensive Performance Secures Three Points
Woodley United gained their first victory of the season by 3-1 against a hard working Tilehurst YM side. Woodley got off to a great start when after fierce pressure the referee awarded a penalty for a clear handball. Skipper Danny Blatchford stepped up and coolly converted into the top left roof of the net. Woodley kept the pressure on and were unfortunate not to have gone further ahead. The Tilehurst keeper made an excellent save from point blank range when Jack Shone latched onto Ricky Benevento’s cross but failed to find then net. Shone was rewarded by his hard work on 30 minutes when Max Edgar split the defence with a precise through ball which Shone ran onto and chipped over the advancing keeper. The defence of Harvey Detenon, Luke Flannigan, Jamie Brown and man-of-the-match Stuart Hawkes stood steady against the mounting Tilehurst pressure in the second half. Woodley were caught out on 83 minutes when a cross from the right was headed past keeper Kieran Ranaldo-Ford. During the course of the game the long throw from Tilehurst gave Woodley problems. It took a brave save from one of the throw ins by Ranaldo-Ford to thwart Tilehurst’s ambitions. Woodley sealed the game in the dying moments when Blatchford’s long clearance was met by Ollie Jones who outstripped the Tilehurst defence and calmly slotted the ball under the keeper.
