Mohawks 1-4 Hearts
Good effort & performance against a decent side.
Two weeks since their last match, the U13 Mohawks returned from International duty with the chance to earn revenge over Hearts of Teddlothian Lions. Hearts had previously knocked us out of the cup in a dramatic 4-3 thriller in which they scored a last minute winner.
Alex C returned to side after injury and Matthew M was the only absentee as he went to the Emirates to see 2nd best team in North London beat the best team in North London.
Hearts started the game strongly, they were dominating the ball and the game was mainly being played in the Woodley half of the field. Mohawks' threatened in some good counter attack play to show that this game was not going to be a one way show.
Hearts attacking pressure eventually put them ahead. They switched play nicely from right to left, creating space for their attacker to have an effort from range which nestled into the corner of the net. 0-1.
Hearts would double their lead from a similar distance after we were caught on the ball in the centre of the pitch. Owen B was very close to keeping this one out, it was unlucky as it would have been a fine save. 0-2.
Our strongest period of the first half were the last 10 minutes. We started to shift the balance of possession and made some chances, the best of which fell to Nazir A & Ruwail H. Ruwail H was played in on goal after some great skill from Jamie M, but the Hearts defender produced some great defending to get back in time to stop the shot whilst Nazir A's sharp turn and shot went straight into the midriff of the keeper.
It didn't take too long for Hearts to make it 0-3 . The second half started similarly to the start of the first, which was a shame considering how we ended the first.
At 0-3 we became more open, leaving more defensive gaps on the pitch as we committed more bodies forward in search of a way back into the game. Hearts would get their 4th on the counter.
Til now Hearts had been deserving of their win, but 4 goals to nothing would be a completely unfair reflection on how we had played. To a man I honestly couldn't tell you a player who had a bad game. Every player kept going, and when I say that I don't just mean taking part I mean fighting to go up the other end and get one back! I don't think the performance levels dropped at all.
Jamie M, Nazir A, Sam H & more all had efforts at goal, but it was Dan R who kept his cool to place a great curled effort across goal into the corner. FT: 1-4 (A goal well deserved)
Last week Hearts beat a team 5-0 from the division above, they are a good side. Of course you'd rather win than lose, but the only thing I took from this game is how strong our side were in mentality and good attitude. We never rolled over, and actually ended the last 10 minutes in control.
Man of the Match: Jamie M - Tough one to choose this week. The only way Hearts could stop him was fouling him, he won plenty of free-kicks! Great dribbling, good skills and on the day was the best player on the pitch from both sides. Keep it up Jamie!
Many thanks to Ibrahim & Richard for sharing the line duties again!
