Tough Day at the Office
The U13 Mohawks were well beaten away at Berks County
After last weeks trek to Twickenham, the U13 Mohawks had another trek in store on Saturday. This time a 9:15am kick-off in Egham. Positively, this time we traveled to a pitch in very good condition at Royal Hollaway College.
Mohawks started the first 5 minutes in control, finding space down the right wing in Berks County's half. Unfortunately, this would turn out to be the most dominant we would be for the rest of the match.
After we failed to clear danger, Berks County converted a cross and took the lead. The goal gave them a lot of confidence and the game became closely contested in the middle of the pitch.
We passed the ball well in patches, with Yuvraj G seeing alot of the ball and he was able to play a through-ball to Nazir A who struck a good shot to the goalkeepers right. Credit where credit is due, the goalkeeper made a fantastic save here in a moment that could have changed the dynamic of the whole game.
Harry A, Matthew M & Alex C all had moments where they swept up well, but many long balls found there way behind our defense and whilst the game was being closely contested Berks looked the most likely to grab a second. That they did, when their forward found space behind our defence from a direct ball and had the composure to take the ball past Owen B and slot into the net. Nothing more our keeper could have done here.
Owen B was having a solid game, collecting many balls into chest and sweeping up well. But it was also a signal of Berks' slight dominance.
At 2-0 the next goal in this game would be crucial, and Berks started the second half in the same manner they ended the first. On the front foot. If anything they were growing more comfortable.
Mohawks were able to find Nazir A and Ruwail H (making his Woodley United debut, welcome to the team) but to Berks' credit they did well to keep them quiet and frustrated.
In Mohawks' most positive moment of the second half, they earned themselves a corner, but it would prove to be the most fatal moment of the game when Berks made a counter attack count and go 3-0 up. We kept it at 2-0 for 20 minutes in the second half, but this goal gave us a mountain to climb.
With the result of the match seemingly decided, our efforts declined, we gave away soft fouls and conceded 4 more goals in the process.
If you look at the results in our division and across youth football there are always high scoring games, especially at u13 (the first 11v11 age group). 7-0 in my opinion reflects how well they defended, rather than how well they got forward.
Before this match, our last two games had shown clear improvement from the start of the season and it's hard to take much from a game that plays out in such a way. So instead we must judge ourselves on how we respond in the next game.
Man of the Match: Yuvraj G - Played really well first half. The good pitch complimented the way he likes to play and on another day he'd have pulled the opposition apart. At his best he's one of, if not, our best... So we need to get the best out of him every week! Well played Yuvraj!
Thank you to Nigel & Ibrahim for running the line.
