The ladies bow out of the Senior Berks&Bucks Cup with a narrow 2-1 defeat, in a game where they weren't phased by a side 2 divisions higher

Woodley United Ladies run in the Senior Berks&Bucks Cup competition came to an end, after conceding in the last 30 seconds of the game against Maidenhead United Ladies in the semi final of the competition.

Maidenhead compete two divisions higher than the Woodley United Ladies, but that didn't phase the sky blues, who through the 90 minutes showed great character, desire, and hard work to overcome the opposition.

This game saw a huge attendance from the local community, and the atmosphere around the ground was by the best seen this year. We caught up with Bert Surtees, Ellen's Grandad, to get his thoughts on the game.

Semi-Final of a prestigious local competition, against an opposition 2 divisions higher than Woodley Utd Ladies - What are your views on this week's game and performance?

This game was very difficult against a physically bigger team. The girls coped very well and put in an excellent performance. I thought they battled well and played the better football. Every girl put in an outstanding effort and I would like to compliment Nicole on her great save in the first half and Rosie for the way she fought to win the ball for her goal.

Earlier this year, the ladies faced a team in the same division as Maidenhead, and were heavily defeated, 5 months later, they narrowly lose with 30 seconds to go - what have been the factors for the improvement?

I think the factors for the improvement are that the girls are working for each other and they have a much better attitude than last season. They play good football and the introduction of some good young players has helped greatly. The management team must be praised for their attitude towards the players and the way they handle the team.

You have been supporting the team for many years, players come and go, peaks and trots in seasons. What has been the success factors so far this year?

The main success factor so far this season has been the introduction of some very good, young players who have integrated into the team very well. The team is more settled with everyone appearing to know their role. Having a consistent and well organised back four and a settled goalkeeper have gone a long way towards the improvement. In general the team has improved in all areas.

Great turn out today in terms of support, what was it like being on that side of the pitch supporting the team, specially when we scored?

Yes it was a very good turnout and it is nice to see that the team is well supported. When we scored there was great excitement and it was a pity that the winning goal came in the last 30 seconds from what I understand was a foul on Ellen. The girls did not deserve to lose.

If you had a message to share with the girls, what would that be?

My message to the girls would be to keep playing the football the way you are with the the attitude you have. Listen to and take note of the instruction from the management team and respect both opponents and referees.

Our favourite question, what do you think the girls can achieve this year?

Who knows what the girls can achieve. With the team as it is they can achieve anything they want. They can win the league and with the addition of extra good players they could be better than the Maidenhead team they played and progress further. They must have the will and attitude to make that happen.

The ladies return to the Jubilee Cup this weekend, with an away fixture against Winchester City Flyers Reserves. Come Down and Support the Ladies!
