Victory in the rain

On a wet grey afternoon with the second half played under floodlights Woodley won their first match in the league cup in over five years courtesy of an own goal.

The opening twenty minutes saw much United pressure and as early as the fourth minute Badsot keeper Jenny Temple was called upon to save for a corner kick, while Sarah Lawrence put over the cross bar from twelve yards when faced with only Temple to beat and Bonnie Messitt shot wide after Saj Turner’s shot was blocked

The home team’s Lucy Coker forced Sophie Cheadle to make a save for a corner kick after twenty minutes in a half that saw Badshot Lea rarely trouble Cheadle and when they did it was more of the visitors’ on doing.

Seven minutes before half time May Hamblin beat Temple only to see a defender clear the goal bound shot to be followed by Mollie Haines failing to direct a header from Tia Harry’s cross goalwards and Temple denying Messitt in stoppage time.

The visitors started the second half as they finished the first and saw Ellen Surtees find the side netting, Harry shooting wide following a good run and May firing over from seven yards when facing Temple.

Surtees forced a corner following a good run and low cross and from Messitt’s resulting kick Hamblin’s header was steered into the net by defender standing on the goal line in the seventieth minute.

Eight minutes later Hamblin was fouled by Holly Montgomery only to see Temple save Charlie Evans’ penalty kick. United did not allow themselves to be distracted from the save and continued to enjoy the better possession and attempts at goal but had to survive the hosts’ corner kick two minutes into second half stoppage time that hit the cross bar and went out of play.
