United exit county cup

It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show for Woodley United last Sunday, as after the excitement of the FA Cup Women’s tie the previous week, United gave flat performance that saw them exit the Berks & Bucks FA Women’s Senior cup to Tier 6 New Bradwell St Peter.

Woodley did not help themselves by having two second half penalties saved by the visitors’ keeper Shayla Burgess, who in addition to these saves also pushed two goal bound shots away for corner kicks.

The opening half hour saw New Bradwell enjoy greater possession but it was Woodley who created the better chances particularly in the sixth minute when good skill by defender Charlie Evans on the touch line saw her pass to Sarah Lawrence who’s when one on one with Burgess saw the keeper parry the ball clear and Bonnie Messit put the follow up attempt into the side netting.

Michelle Quinn saw a header from Kate Hudson’s corner kick go straight to Burgess and then another header from Ellen Surtees’ free kick go narrowly wide.

However, it was New Bradwell who opened the scoring in the twenty ninth minute when Lucy Hopper’s free kick saw Kelly Evans allowed to head unchallenged pass Sophie Measham in United’s goal.

United responded with May Hamblin finding the side netting while Sarah Lawrence came close to levelling when Burgess punched clear a corner only to see the shot rebound back into play.

The final action of the half saw Meacham deny Lizzie Downmill.

Five minutes into the second half Elise Young was allowed to shoot past Sophie Cheadle (a half time substitute) to double the visitors’ lead.

Having extended their lead New Bradwell defended well against Woodley pressure that also saw Burgess save spot kicks from Quinn and Saj Turner while also denying Lawrence and Evans with good saves.
