In a game that Woodley enjoyed good possession and played the better football, it was left to Ellen Surtees to level the scores in the eighty eight minute following Wargrave having taken the lead two minutes earlier.
The first half saw much of the play in the visitors half and the positive start was rewarded in the sixteenth minute when Clara Stringer’s goal bound shot was deflected by Wargrave’s Charlotte Maskell wrong footing Amy Cox in goal.
Using both flanks well United continued to put pressure on the visitors but in doing so were susceptible to the long ball forward which was ably dealt with by Surtees and Gemma Bloor on a number of occasions. With the half coming to its end Wargave levelled on forty four minutes direct from a free kick into Bonnie Messitt’s top right corner.
The second half saw United start strongly with Maskell twice denying May Hamblin with fine saves and Rosie Page-Smith hitting the post but the home team where unable to press home the advantage. With both teams making substitutions United’s play became disjointed while Wargave started to dominate forcing Messitt to make three excellent saves, one being a push onto the cross bar from a free kick that was subsequently cleared.
With the game entering the final ten minutes United was becoming stretched at the back, twice being helped by off side decisions but with four minutes remaining Wargrave broke and lobbed Messitt to take the lead. The lead was short lived when Surtees, now playing on the right wing got forward and fired home at the near post to give Woodley a share of the spoils.
