Finally United’s good performances were rewarded with a second league win of the season a from behind win against fellow strugglers Bracknell Town. However, there was a hint of good fortune as Bracknell’s Tina Leahy saw a goal disallowed for deliberate handling the ball into the net in the eighty eight minute.
The visitors started sprightly putting a free kick over Emily Sherwood’s cross bar in the third minute and then taking the lead two minutes later when a Sarah Devern corner was headed into her own net by Gemma Bloor.
It was not until the twentieth minute that United started to find their rhythm but once they did Bonnie Messitt Rosie Page-Smith fired wide in quick succession before a Page-Smith cross was cleared to Danielle Perryman’s whose cross found the unmarked Jess Grimmett who had time to control the ball and fire past ex United keeper Lisa Phillips and a lunging defender on the her goal line to level on twenty five minutes.
United started the second half at a canter with both Ellen Surtees and Louise Thompson shooting wide before Thompson beat Phillips to square to the unmarked Messitt who gave the home team the lead on fifty two minutes. Two minutes later Phillips denied Thompson as the home side sought to drive home their domination.
However, there was to be no further goals and while United were good value for the win they did need player of the match Grimmett to clear off her own goal line on the seventy eighth minute.
