United strolled into the second round of BBFA Women’s Senior cup with a 6-0 victory over Ascot United in a match that was over as a contest after thirteen minutes and one that saw the visitors have only a single shot on goal, that landed on the roof of the net, while United’s keeper Lisa Phillips did not have a save to make.
Woodley kicked off and the first attack saw Laura Woodley volley the ball, in a crowded penalty area, into the side of the net to open the scoring in the opening minute. The lead was doubled on thirteen minutes when Nicola Froud bundled the ball over the line from short range following a United corner.
United continued to force home their advantage and were again rewarded on twenty two minutes when full back Amy Holden found right winger Sarah Davern whose pass over the visitors’ defence allowed Rania Bird to run onto it and lob the Anna Lisney in the Ascot goal to give the hosts a three goal lead.
The game entered into a lull with Ascot enjoying better possession and getting into good wide positions but did not worry the United defence apart from the lob that landed on the roof of the net. With half time approaching Woodley stepped up their play and scored twice in the five minutes before the break. Woodley found Bird to score her second of the game after forty minutes and Jess Grimmett completed the first half scoring from a Froud corner.
The second half was an anti-climax and though only the one goal was scored the home side were guilty of wasting good chances as three times they blazed over with only Lisney to beat while Lisney also got the better of her opponents in three one on one situations.
The only goal came when the dangerous Bird found Woodley, who ran unchallenged from the half way line to slot pass Lisney on fifty eight minutes.
United now travel to MK Dons in the second round, a repeat of last season’s final that the FA Women’s Premier League side won.
