Eldon United Red
Pitch played a part
The team were early onto the pitch and ready for this big match but after a week of rain the same could not be said for the pitch. This was not in the greatest condition with clumps of grass towards the wings. The game started evenly, but by the second minute Woodley were on the attack with Thady bursting down the line before being tackled by a clump of grass. In the third minute Jaden too went down the left only to be stopped by the pitch.
Woodley were doing the pressing but Eldon were looking solid at the back and breaking with pace down the right, Matthew and Arayan seeing them out. In the fifth minute an attack down the right resulted in Sam looping a shot which the keeper palmed out to Thady on the penalty spot who right footed, put in back towards the goal for the keeper to again save above his head. Woodley started to press harder and in the 6th minute Thady crossed from the left for Tom in the box who met the ball at close range but couldn’t find the net. Straight from this Eldon broke down their left with Woodley scrambling to get back. Joe came out of his box and cleared the danger.
In the ninth minute against, the run of play, Eldon put together a strong attack through the middle and despite several half tackles by Woodley they managed to keep moving forwards and scored from close in.
Woodley kept pushing and Eldon kept counter attacking. Further chances to Thady and Jayden came and went before Matthew let a long range effort fly just wide. The chances were still coming but Eldon continued to look dangerous with their speed down the flanks. Joe was called on with several catches from long range efforts. Finally the pressure told in the 19th minute when Sam finally got one to pass the keeper high to the left.
The half time talk was about taking your chances and making tackles count.
The second half started with a couple of subs but early on, the pattern of Woodley attacking but not beating the keeper continued with a through ball to Thady on the left from Jayden ending in another shot. In the second minute a Thady tackle higher up the pitch resulted in a cross which Jayden and Tom chased in but again their keeper cleared.
The game swung now and Eldon started to press and it wasn’t long before more missed tackles down the Woodley right resulted in another close range shot. Eldon were now pushing with Woodley hitting back on the counter attack. Joes was again called into action with a catch before sending a long kick up to Jayden, Sam and Thady to try again.
It wasnt until the 13th minute that Woodley started to push once more and the chances started to come again. In the 13th minute a Thady corner found Sam and the back post but the shot hit the keeper, came out to Arayan who shot again but the keeper managed to sit on the ball again. In the 15th minute Tom broke down the right and found Thady bursting through in the middle, only for the ball to bounce up into his knee and flying just over the bar. In the 17th minute the Eldon post was hit and again in the last minute Woodley were through down the left, Thady’s cross was half deflected by a last ditch sliding defender and the ball again hit the upright.
Eldon played very well and had some fantastic players. Both team had played a very high level of football in this nail biting affair.
Effort award went to Sam, for his box to box running and reading of the game . He put in some good defensive tackles when really this should have been the responsibility of the defence.
