Woodley Utd Spitfires had a full-strength squad to choose from in their first Division 1 game. They had not played NPL before but were expecting a tough game, having been promoted.
Spitfires were looking to play their normal passing game but were struggling to keep the ball. Spitfires looked nervy at the back and the midfield were giving the ball away. It wasn't long before NPL took the lead with their first chance when a shot from the edge of the box went into the corner of the goal. 0-1. Max B was struggling to get into the game upfront and the NPL defence were always there to make a last ditch tackle or interception.
Changes were made at half-time with Spitfires now going to a 4-4-2 formation with Ben H coming on upfront. However, they conceded within a couple of minutes when, despite a good save from Will J, the NPL player was there to score at the far post. 0-2. Spitfires were being more direct and Ben H was unlucky not to score. Joseph S and Will H were starting to get into the game and were playing some great balls in behind the NPL defence but NPL attacked and won a penalty after Demi A brought down their player and he made no mistake. 0-3. Ben H pulled a goal back after a good through ball from Toby R. 1-3. However, there was no come back as NPL scored again with a long-ranged volley. 1-4 final score.
Ben H was named Man of the Match for his constant threat to the NPL goal
