Depleted Spitfires beat Caversham AFC Rebels 2-1 in the EBFA Trophy
Woodley Utd Spitfires went into the game missing Dan H (school event), Alex G (school event), Jake D (unavailable) and Max B (injured). Will H was also carrying a knock but decided to start the game.
The game was played on a long, bobbly pitch on a wet and windy day. Caversham started well and were causing Spitfires problems with balls in behind the defence. Spitfires were struggling to play their normal passing football and were failing to adapt to the size of the pitch and the conditions. Caversham took the lead when the ball was won on the right wing and a deep cross was converted at the far post. 1-0. Spitfires began to settle down with Jack C and Toby R working hard in midfield. Will H was trying to get on the ball but was struggling with his calf injury, which effectively meant that Spitfires were playing with 10 and a half players. Spitfires equalised with their best passing play of the game with Will H, Toby R, Tristan R and Jack C all involved to set-up Ben H to convert past the keeper. 1-1. Demi A and Taylor M were keeping things tight at the back with Joseph S filling in at right back.
In the 2nd half, Spitfires started well and scored within 2 minutes when Jack C won the ball in midfield and played a through ball to Ben H who flicked on for Tristan R to score into the bottom corner. Spitfires were now on top but Caversham always looked dangerous on the break and from set pieces and Will J had to make a couple of decent clearances in goal. Spitfires were looking for the killer 3rd goal but Caversham were strong at the back and the game ended 2-1.
Jack C was named Man of the Match for his work rate and passing in midfield
