The Spitfires got the season off to a solid start with 3 goals and clean sheet. All the goals came in the second half after a stalemate in the first half that saw few chances for either side. It was a fairly even half but despite a few good runs from Henley's number 10, the Spitfires were never really tested at the back.
The Spitfires started the second half better and after some decent passing moves in the first ten minutes of the half, it was a long through ball that led to the opening goal. Sam beating the Henley defence for pace and slotting the ball to the keeper's left. That goal seemed to give the team more confidence and 2 minutes later Charlie, on a run down the left fired a dangerous cross in which the Henley centre back turned into his own goal at the front post. 2-0! There were chances for the Spitfires to extend their lead, most notably for Joe after a strong run down the right and a decent shot which was well saved by the Henley keeper. The third goal eventually came 1 minute before the end of the game with Robert passing the ball into the net on the right after good work down the left and a diagonal ball into the box. There was still time for Henley to win a penalty but after conceding 2 penalties without conceding a goal in either in the pre-season friendlies, it was no surprise when Leon comfortably saved the penalty.
So a 3-0 win to take to Curley Park next week. Man of the match was Harry, who despite playing with an injury to his back, worked tirelessly to break up Henley's play in the middle of the park.
