Spitfires end season on a high
Goals from Harry, Robert and Tom
The U16 Spitfires finished the season on a high against Berks County on a cold Spring morning.
The football wasn't always pretty but the Spitfires showed good character and fighting spirit and they kept their cool when some of the Berks County players didn't at the end.
The first 20 minutes was fairly cagey with each side having one really good chance each. For the Spitfires, Samien sliced his chance wide whilst Ben made a great save from close range. The first goal came on 27 minutes with the Spitfires moving the ball around well outside the Berks County penalty area, Harry took a shot from just outside the area with his left peg and beat the keeper to his right.
Into the 2nd half and around the 60 minute mark, Harry collided with the Berks County keeper. Harry went into the book, perhaps harshly, and whilst the Berks keeper tried to play on it was clear he probably suffered a bit of concussion and was subbed. I hope he is OK.
The Spitfires took advantage of the Berks County sub playing in goal and scored twice in 3 minutes between minutes 70 and 72. The first from Robert slotting the ball home from a neat square pass from Zak. The second was Tom's first league goal of the season, coolly finishing into the corner from around the penalty spot. There were other chances for Spitfires and at the other end Ban made a great save and Jack made a great goal-line clearance in a crazy last 10 minutes.
I couldn't split the man of the match today. Ben made 2 or 3 very good saves and Corin was excellent in midfield so they share the award. Shout outs though for Harry who was excellent in the first half and for Tom for his goal. Well done lads.
