Alex Reed saves two penalties as United win another Monday night shootout

Woodley beat Step 4 opposition for the first time in history

Woodley played a Step 4 team for the first time in a competitive match on Monday evening; facing Beaconsfield Town who are currently seventh in the Southern Football League East Division in the County Cup.

For the second consecutive Monday, United progressed in a penalty shootout after the game finished 2-2. A fantastic achievement in a season of so many 'firsts'.

Woodley started really well. In the opening sixty seconds Callum Samuel-Harmen, making his first start for the first team, cut to the byline and put in a great cross that flashed across the hosts six yard box.

Forward Toby Briggs tested Beaconsfield keeper Jamie Norris from distance before a lovely move down the left fizzled out before a cross could be put into the box. Left back Jordan Goddard turned his marker with a nice bit of skill then found Danny Horscroft whose nice touch saw Samuel-Harmen race clear down the left wing. Samuel-Harmen then had a shot blocked as United dominated the opening ten minutes.

It took till the fifteenth minute for the hosts to register a shot; a long range effort missed to the right.

More chances for the away side. Horscroft missed the target whilst Jaydyn Englefield had an effort blocked after a long spell of Woodley possession. Some indecision in the home defence allowed Horscroft to nip in and loft the ball over Norris only for a defender to clear off the line. The resultant corner ended up at the feet of Englefield who once again was denied by a block.

Half an hour in saw Beaconsfield have a decent spell. Lots of crosses and possession in the final third but no shots on Alex Reed's goal.

Eight minutes before the break saw United take a deserved lead. A raking Horscroft pass picked out Englefield on the right wing who was wiped out by Norris just inside the box. Englefield took the resultant penalty beating Norris with a low shot into the left corner.

You would be hard pressed to find a better Woodley first half performance. The football being played was excellent. A superb move involving Goddard, Samuel-Harmen and Horscroft ended with a Briggs shot from the left side of the box saved by Norris diving to cover his near post.

The final chance of an entertaining forty five minutes fell to the hosts. An ambitious effort by Ollie Jones saw him spin and fire off a shot that was comfortable for Reed.

HT Beaconsfield Town 0-1 Woodley United

The home side made a double change at the break and it almost paid off immediately when substitute Jordan Ajanlekoko fired a good chance over from twelve yards.

Beaconsfield were much improved in the second half; Reed pulled off a great save to tip over a Wes Daly shot that made it through a sea of bodies. The resultant corner was headed in by centre back Michael Peacock.

Sixty seconds later United retook the lead when a perfectly weighted through ball by Englefield found Briggs who lofted over Norris. A great finish from the Woodley forward who worked tirelessly all evening.

Reed was once again called into action just before the hour diving to his left to deny Kofi Lockhart-Adams.

Woodley made a change on sixty minutes when Owen Davies replaced Jake Nicholls.

More pressure from the hosts came when the second half subs combined. A cushioned header by Ajanlekoko found Aaron Minhas who saw his crisp shot deflect wide. The following set piece was hooked wide by Luke Neville.

United made a further change with fifteen minutes to go when Samuel-Harmen departed for Jake White.

Clear-cut chances for Woodley were few and far between since the break. After withstanding a lot of pressure, Briggs was able to tee up Davies who missed to the right.

Beaconsfield levelled the scores for a second time with seven minutes to go when a left wing throw- in fell to Lockhart-Adams who smashed into the top left corner.

Four minutes after the goal, United made their final change when Liam Wilson came on for Briggs.

In the last few minutes Beaconsfiedl had a great chance to nick it when a good run by Lockhart-Adams ended with him pulling the ball back from the byline to Ajanlekoko who made minimal contact from close range allowing Reed to save.

FT Beaconsfield Town 2-2 Woodley United

Beaconsfield went first and scored whilst White saw his effort tipped onto the right post. Both teams netted their second penalty before Reed's heroics. Substitute Charlie Kuehn had his effort saved in the top right corner allowing Joe Barley to level the scores at two apiece. Reed then kept out Lockhart-Adams diving to his left which gave Englefield the chance to put Woodley ahead, he did, coolly going down the middle. The home side scored their fifth meaning it was up to Wilson to send United through and he made no mistake from twelve yards beating Norris with a low shot to the right corner.

Woodley win 4-3 on penalties
